How to “Beat the Algorithm” On Any Platform

Whenever the topic of marketing on social media channels comes up…

Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tik Tok, or Google…

The most common question I’m asked is, “How can I beat the algorithm?”

See, we’re hard-wired to want to find a hack or shortcut, partly due to, let’s just call them nefarious marketers, always trying to sell you the latest hack or code to get in through the backdoor.

But here’s the problem with hacks. Not only are they short-lived, they become increasingly difficult to find as the algorithms on social channels continue to improve.

And to be clear, here’s a few examples of what I mean by “hacks.”

  • Buying fake followers on Instagram just to inflate your account
  • Stuffing keywords on your YouTube Videos or using Clickbait to get more clicks.
  • Buying Facebook Page ‘Likes’ for something popular like pets or sports cars, but then changing the page to something for your business (If you haven’t seen this before, this strategy happened ALL the time when Facebook launched their PPC platform)

Now, the chances are if you’re one of my subscribers you’re probably not interested in doing anything like I described above…

But that still begs the question: “What should we do as marketers?”

And the answer is fairly simple.

Instead of trying to figure out how to beat the algorithm, figure out how to make it LOVE you.

When the algorithm loves you, it doesn’t matter how big or small your account is, you’ll be rewarded with quality customers engaging with your content.

In other words, I’d rather have 100 true followers than 10,000 fakes just to make my account look good.

So how do we get the algorithm to love us? Well, we could talk forever about that depending on the platform, but let me give you my best advice on the top platforms out there.

Youtube: Post regularly (whether that’s daily, weekly, or once a month), focus on on your Click-Through Rates AND your audience retention

Instagram: Don’t guilt people into following you by follow for follow or like for like strategies...instead, comment regularly on your favourite accounts and let people naturally visit your profile. If you’re not commenting and engaging with other people’s content daily, your growth will stagnate.

Forums like Reddit, Quora or Facebook Groups: Same as above, engage regularly in groups relative to your niche. People will naturally check out your profile if you’ve provided value.

Tik Tok: Upload daily and follow the trends. Tik Tok’s algorithm LOVES to show trends so use popular songs or memes that you regularly see in your own feed.

Pinterest: Focus on quality over quantity.

Facebook: Giveaways still do very well on Facebook as an organic strategy. Just be sure to give away something relevant to the products you’re promoting.

Google: Simple Wordpress Websites with regularly uploaded content still work. Just be sure you’re researching keywords to base your articles on.

Alternatively, upload content to Medium(dot)com for a blog platform with a social aspect.

So there you have it…

My quick tutorial on how to get the algorithm to love you on the most popular channels.

My encouragement is for you not to try every single one of these, but choose one or two to become a master. Research the best strategies on YouTube, blog articles, and through the PWA Program

You are much more likely to succeed by going “all in” on one platform than trying to tackle them all at once.

To Your Success!
