How to Build a Long-Term Business from Affiliate Marketing

I’m noticing a lot of comments and questions in Facebook Groups & Online Forums asking about what type of offers we can promote as an affiliate…


The truth is there are hundreds of thousands of products you can promote as an affiliate depending on your niche or expertise. 


The problem is, not all affiliate programs are created equal - and not all products are fit to build a LONG-TERM affiliate business.


So let’s break down what to look for when you’re searching for products of your own to promote in this or another niche!


#1: Look for Products with Recurring Commissions


Locking in a high-ticket sale is a rush, there’s no denying. The feeling you get when you look in your dashboard and see a $750 commission coming your way is amazing! 


But the way to build a long-term business from affiliate marketing is locking in those monthly, recurring commissions where you don’t need to continuously find new customers month in and month out. 


An example of this is GetResponse and ClickFunnels where you’re paid monthly commissions every-time a member renews another month.


While those commissions may be small, they compound over time like interest and can build into something sustainable versus a few flash-in-the-pan sales that are here today and gone tomorrow.


#2: Find affiliate products that STACK


What does that mean?


Most affiliate marketers when they’re just getting started will find a few one-off products here and there that essentially do or teach the same thing.


Unfortunately, this means that you’re likely only to get one sale per subscriber.


However, if you find products that BUILD on one another then the same customer can purchase several products from you naturally, without having to sell them on this or that. 


An example of this would be from the company BeachBody. Yes, they sell plenty of home-workout tutorials, but they also sell Shakes, Meal Plans, & workout equipment. 


That means, one customer can buy ALL of their products and it not be redundant. You want the same thing in your business - find products that can stack to increase your customer’s AOV (Average Order Value)


#3: Find products with GREAT Customer Service


People miss this too often. They look at a product and judge it only if it sells well.


However, if you’re in this for the long-haul and you have selected products that hopefully your customers will renew, it’s imperative to find products that have a great retention rate so you can be sure your customers will stick around.


And the biggest factor of this I’ve seen is in the customer service category.


Make sure there’s a way for your customers to chat with the company’s rep 24/7 or quickly get a response when they’re sending an email. 


In other words, treat your subscribers like clients - and you are the consultant advising on products you know, like, and trust.


Keep these three criteria in mind and you’re guaranteed to promote only the best possible products to grow your affiliate business long-term.

Attract Buyers With My ‘Unique Solution’ Strategy

Ever wonder why some ads, promos, or emails attract buyers while others only attract tire-kickers that click without taking action?


It’s because of a concept we call “Pre-framing.”


See, when you pre-frame your customer, you’re attracting the right people to your content, while repelling the wrong type of person.


To use an example, think about how some luxury brands market their products like Rolls Royce, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, even American Express…


They don’t try to be a product for everyone. Their marketing intentionally attracts a certain individual or avatar. 


So when a customer goes to purchase a Rolls, the marketing has already pre-framed them. They believe they’re a right fit for the car even before they’ve arrived at the dealership. 


It’s important that we use this type of “pre-framing” in our advertising.

We do this by discovering our ‘Unique Selling Solution.’


A Unique Selling Solution is just a fancy term that identifies what makes your offer different from every other offer out there?


This may sound complicated but it’s actually very simple and once you do this exercise below you’ll be writing high-converting ads, emails, or any type of content with ease and clarity. 


Step #1: Discover What Problem You Want to Solve in Your Customer’s Lives


  • Do you want to help people develop a side hustle while still working their 9-5?
  • Do you want to teach Digital Marketers how they can become their own clients with Affiliate Marketing?
  • Do you want to help seniors build an income as they head into retirement?


Once you know what problem you want to solve, you can move on to Step #2.


Step #2: What Makes Your Product unique (faster, better, easier) than what’s out there on the market? 


This should be the core of your ad or you won’t stand out in the crowd.


So let’s make this practical…


Instead of saying:


[Step 1] “Everyone wants to make more money! Learn how to make $100-$200 a day online with only your laptop and a wifi connection…


[Step 2] Grab my course because it's the best way to earn an extra income whether you’re doing it as a side hustle or want to earn a full-time living.”


Those sounds pretty bland, don’t they? They try to speak to everyone and end up speaking to no one. What’s worse, the people you do attract won’t be in the right frame of mind (pre-framed) to make a purchase.


Now, let’s apply what we learned above and see if we can spice this up a bit:


[Step 1] Marketing Software is one of the fastest growing industries but even if you had a great idea, the costs to create, maintain, and promote one requires some serious investment…


[Step 2] But what if I told you there was a back door method that allowed you to partner with world-class software, and collect a commission every time you promote them instead of creating your own? 


Now, I’m speaking to one person and their pain-point. I’m talking specifically to someone who’d love to build their own marketing software as a way to earn additional income but wouldn’t be able to afford creating one themselves…


Then, I’m providing a unique solution where they can partner with existing software and earn money simply from promoting them throughout their training.


Even though I’m narrowing the audience down much more tightly than in the first example, because I’ve pre-framed my customer well, I’m much more likely to attract actual buyers than someone who just wants to make more money and will click on just about anything.


So my challenge for you this week is to conduct this exercise.


Think through:


Step #1: What specific pain point or person do you want to speak to in your marketing? WHO do you want to help


Step #2: What is your Unique Solution to help them solve their problems? What makes your solution better, faster, stronger than the competition.


Remember, we could all be promoting the same course but speaking to thousands of different pain points, and offering thousands of unique solutions to problems.

Whether you’re promoting e-commerce products, or as an affiliate for another product.


Whatever it is, find the problem or person you want to help, then discover your unique selling solution. You’ll attract far more buyers this way.

Why I LOVE Promoting Software

You may have noticed that one of the favourite things I recommend promoting is software.


Sure, there are plenty of other products to promote, from Online Courses to eCommerce products. 


But I want to do my best to set you up for success as affiliate marketers and there’s no better place to begin than with software.



...and many others that not specifically listed but you can find by Googling “software affiliate programs.” 


The reason for this is simple but worth listing out in case you yourself are curious, and also as a way to help teach this to your personal subscribers and students.


So here are my top reasons why I LOVE Software Affiliate Marketing.


Reason #1: Recurring Commissions from One Sale


Unlike Online Courses or eCommerce products where you typically only earn from the initial sale, most software companies offer a lifetime commission rate.


This means, if someone becomes a customer, you will earn on everything they purchase for the lifetime of their patronage. 


This, I believe is truly passive income…


You have the ability to continue earning from the sale of a customer without having to “resell” anything. 


Reason #2: The Software Market is Rarely Saturated


I know sometimes it feels like everyone already has this or that, but that’s typically because we find ourselves marketing to the same groups of people. 


When you begin to find your niche, you’ll discover that there is a world of people who have never heard of this software before…


Sure, many Digital Marketers are familiar with some of these tools…


But compare ClickFunnels 70K users with Wix or Weebly’s 2M! 


That means there is a blue ocean of opportunity when you begin to find people who would never know these software are their solutions.


Reason #3: Customer Support


Most software companies simply cannot afford to “go light” on their customer support. It’s the backbone of their business and many (like GetResponse) offer 24/7 LIVE Chat services. 


Their chief interest is keeping your customers around as long as possible so they do whatever it takes. 


If your student or subscriber has a question about how to use the software, there’s often an answer within the general website or you can direct them to customer support. 


Again, while this isn’t 100% hands-free, it’s quite passive.


Reason #4: Multiple Niches


My main focus is specifically on Digital Marketing software, but that’s certainly not the only type out there.


There’s plenty of software promoting health, wealth, and happiness with affiliate links you can use to promote them. 


If you decide to do a niche outside of what Digital Marketing, you’ll still be able to find plenty of software to promote.


Reason #5: Professionally Designed Sales Funnels


I’ll be honest, sometimes I look at the courses, sales pages, eCom products on ClickBank or JVZOO and think, “these don’t look as professional as I’d like.”


Well, that’s typically not a problem with software. Again, these are massive companies so they are always testing their websites, sales pages, and funnels. 


You can be proud to promote quality software.


Reason #6: Instant Approval 


While I can't say this is a 100% guarantee, as the affiliate industry is growing, it can be more difficult to get approved for certain affiliate and CPA offers.


However, I’ve consistently found that software has a low barrier of entry, so if you’re a complete beginner, the chances are you’ll be able to find a handful of software products that will accept you as an affiliate, ASAP.


Alright , well while I’m sure I can think of more those were the just the top that came to my mind.
