“You’re under no obligation to be the same person you were 5 minutes ago.” - Alan Watts
Listen. Life is short.
If you’re not satisfied with where you are in life… or more profoundly, who you are, you’re under no obligation to remain what way.
Start working on change. Immediately.
Not satisfied with your financial situation? Start the change now. Invest in a course. Register a domain. Start a YouTube channel, or write an article on Medium. Build something, get out there. Change things. What do you have to lose?
Same goes if you’re out of shape… so much that you’re afraid you won’t even be able to climb to the second floor without getting out of breath. Start the change now. Walk around the house. Then, walk around the block. Then, walk a mile. And so on. Change things!
Or maybe you’ve been feeling that lately the relationship with your significant other or with your kids, or someone else who matters a lot to you ,has been slipping. Start the change. Call them, or sit down and talk to them.
Now, so far, so good, right?
Unfortunately, this is where a lot of people get stuck.
I get that. It can get pretty confusing. What I mean is… most people do realize that something’s gotta give if they don’t like the way things are. It’s not some sort of arcane knowledge I’m bestowing on you.
But how do you know what you actually need to change in order to become happier, more productive, and more successful?
The first step is to look at yourself from the outside.
… Like a friend would. Ever notice how it’s easy for you to give advice to other people but hard to see what it is you’re supposed to be doing yourself?
Don’t be too hard on yourself. That’s not the point. We have enough criticism in our lives as it is.
Instead, think of it like this… “If I was this person’s best friend, what would be my advice to them”?
Next, spot the habit that creates the thing you want to change.
Let’s say you want to lose weight. Analyze your habits. What is it that you do - perhaps even subconsciously without thinking too much about it - that has created the extra weight?
Perhaps instead of water you’re drinking soda. Perhaps you’re snacking all day long. Or maybe you don’t have enough energy to figure out how to eat healthily… so you’ve inadvertently created this nasty loop - where you feel tired because you’re not eating healthy and you’re not eating healthy because you’re tired.
Replace the habits that don’t serve you anymore and…
Practice every day.
To create a lasting habit, no matter what it is, you need daily dedication.
That’s right. No cheat days.
Go.
Change and become the person you’re supposed to be.
To Your Success!
